Watermelon Cucumber Detox Water

I love water …. no that’s an understatement ….. I’M OBSESSED WITH WATER!!!  If you know me, I’m always drinking water.  Very rarely will you ever catch me without a water bottle …  I’m constantly drinking water and somehow feel like I can never get enough of it.  Tap water, bottle water, Perrier … you name it … I’m drinking it!  My sister-in-law actually makes fun of me because of how much water I drink…but I can’t help it…I honestly feel like it’s the only thing that is able to ever quench my thirst.  I don’t need any powders or potions to help me down at least a litre or two a day – but once in a while, especially during the summer I love to jazz up my H2O and as a bonus, give my system a good old detox!

Here’s one of my favourite combinations: Watermelon and Cucumber …. yuummm!!!!  The juicy sweet watermelon, paired with the crisp, fresh cucumber makes this water a god sent on hot summer days.  Not only will it satisfy a dry mouth but it will also flush your body of built up toxins.

I first being by chunking up some watermelon and cutting a cucumber into long ribbons.  (You could also cut your cucumber in circles, but I like using my food slicer for this).

Next I get a 16oz mason jar, fill it up with some ice, a few chunks of watermelon and a couple ribbons of cucumber.  You can also add in a few slices of lime like I did to intensify the detox process.

I then top up the entire jar with filtered water, screw on the lid and give it a good shake.  You want all of the ingredients to jive and infuse the water with their lovely goodness.  I then pop this baby in the fridge for at least 2 or even overnight if I can before I drink it.

The longer that you allow the water to sit not only will it be more flavourful but you will also be benefitting from the amazing detox properties that each of these ingredients have. *note: when you make this water, make sure that you consume it within 48 hours.  If you can’t, dump the contents and make it again*.

Watermelon has many powerful health benefits to it.  It contains a high amount of vitamins (A, C & B-6), minerals and antioxidants but also is low in calories.  It is made up of over 90% water and studies have shown that by increasing your intake of watermelon can decrease the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  It can also promote a healthy complexion, hair and increase your energy.  It also has a compound in it which helps the liver and kidneys filter out ammonia so it is an excellent fruit to include when detoxing.

Cucumber has very similar properties to watermelon.  It also works as a filtering agent which will rid your body of built up toxins.  Cucumbers have most of the vitamins that your body need in a single day, including the skin which contains 10% of your daily intake of vitamin C.  Since cucumbers are made up of 95% water, it helps keep your body hydrated and help ease anxiety and stress (no wonder they say ‘cool as a cucumber’).

We all know how important it is to keep our bodies hydrated at all times, especially during the summer.  It keeps our skin look supple and young, maintains our body fluid balance and even “helps” things move along our digestive track.  Combining water with other super-foods such as watermelon and cucumber help “flush” your system of unwanted toxins and gives your liver and kidneys the boost that they might need.

I really hope that you’ll try this recipe out and enjoy it the next time you sit outside.  I promise you that the cool, crisp  flavours will satisfy your thirst and you won’t even realize that you’re doing something good for your body.  If you like this recipe and would like to see more like it, let me know in the comments section below.

Go grab yourself a nice cold glass of refreshing water and I’ll talk to you soon.

Until next time!

  1. Many detox programs include cucumbers on them for this very reason, and adding them to your water pulls out their minerals so you’re getting an added benefit. Mix in the lemon juice and you’re getting the cleansing effect of citric acid and helping to clear out the digestive system.
